Case Study - Colbea Reception & Office Space

The Company

Colbea is a not-for-profit enterprise and business support agency based in Colchester, Essex

The Brief

A few months ago, we were thrilled to be contacted by the Facilities Manager at Colbea as they were looking to complete a refurbishment of their main reception area which included removing an old built-in reception desk, decorating, new carpet tiles and LVT flooring, signage and office furniture.  The intention was to reconfigure the space with collaboration and breakout areas and social space for staff and tenants.

The Journey

When we met with Parris, she explained that as Colbea were celebrating their 40th anniversary and as they had re-designed their logos and corporate colour scheme. There was no better time to refresh the current workspace.  As previous tenants of Colbea, we knew the importance the reception area could have on potential and existing tenants.  However the team at Colbea, not only wanted to refresh the existing space, they also wanted to introduce collaborative working and a welcoming breakout area for tenants. 

Consultation & Designs

We discussed the full refurbishment works required to the main reception, two offices, kitchen area and corridor up to the staircase entrance.

We had several meetings with the team to discuss their full requirements and to choose colours and materials that they wanted in the building.  We then produced 2D drawings ensuring we could look at the very best use of space.  Using these drawings, we revised the design several times and created 3D coloured visuals. 

Colbea design

We prepared the walls and timber and decorated with their new colour scheme.  The new Colbea branding is bright, colourful and eye-catching.  Colbea has three strands to the business, ‘Work’, ‘Learn’ and ‘Grow’, each with a different colour associated, alongside their main logo in teal.  Through the design process, we decided to use the Colbea teal on the main walls and use hot pink, teal and grey in the office furnishings.

We removed and replaced the existing carpet, and fully prepared the floor with a self-levelling screed. In the main entrance, hall and part of the kitchen/social area, we supplied LVT flooring with commercial-grade carpet tiles fitted to the main office, two adjacent offices, the remainder of the kitchen/social area and the training room.  We disconnected the electrics underneath the existing reception desk and installed new sockets to the new collaboration table and poseur table. We also repositioned an existing radiator and fitted a 65” Smart TV to replace the existing directory board.

For the furniture, the collaboration table from Hawk Furniture was a great solution to a collaborative workspace, ideal for 6 people and with bulb lights hanging from the frame at the top. 

We fitted a power module to this and provided 3 stools and 3 cube stools in the hot pink for this area.   All the furniture had classic ash tops with black frames.

We fitted double bench desks in the new work area and the two person office, with mesh back chairs with pink seats.  We provided an L-shaped corner sofa arrangement in the main area in grey and in the meeting room we supplied a circular table on a trumpet base alongside some of our most popular breakout chairs, again in pink.

In the kitchen/breakout area, we supplied two 2 seater sofas with coffee tables, a Poseur table, with power module and some polypropylene (wipe clean) stools, ideal for a dining area.

We also supplied a special size 3 seater sofa to fit within an alcove in the main reception area. New internal and external signage and bespoke manifestations to the glass partitioning between the social space and the new work area.

The Result

A welcoming, modern, vibrant, collaborative workspace for staff and tenants.  We are very grateful to Colbea for being entrusted with creating their new look workspace, and proud of the finished result.
